Blanc Fumé de Pouilly 'Barre à Mine', Michel Redde et Fils 2022

Loire Valley, France

Grape Variety: Sauvignon Blanc

Alcohol: 12% ABV

The Story

In 2009, Loire boutique producer Michel Redde embarked on an ambitious, one-of-a-kind venture – reclaiming an abandoned flint quarry in Tracy-sur-Loire known as Les Champs des Froids.

With its sun-drenched south-west exposure and razor-sharp flint soils, the site was painstakingly cleared, prepared, and planted with four hectares of vines – each one driven into the rocky ground with the help of a crowbar (barre à mine). The effort paid off: the inaugural 2014 harvest delivered fruit of striking purity and intensity.

Eight vintages on, the 2022 vintage continues to impress.

Vineyard & Winemaking

La Moynerie covers 40 hectares occupying a prime position in the heart of the Pouilly-sur-Loire region. Most of the domaine's vineyards are on the magnificent south facing slopes over-looking the Loire River. Soils are clay-limestone, which give an early harvest, producing wines that are rich, harmonious and long-lived, and clay-siliceous soils which gives wines with distinctive flinty flavours. Priority is given to quality, so the vines are pruned very short to obtain complex musts and concentrated aromas.

The Redde family strongly believe in working with respect for their vineyards and the surrounding environment and their wines are certified organic by Ecocert from the 2023 vintage. Their vineyards are managed without the use of herbicides, insecticides or any other synthetic additives.

The winery at La Moynerie is well equipped and modern. The modern presses allow a light pressing giving a gentle flow of the juice, similar to the quality obtained in the past with wooden hand-operated presses.

Vinification takes place in temperature controlled, stainless steel vats which are sealed from the air, preventing oxidation to the wines. This helps to preserve the rich aromas and flavours given to the wine by the vineyard's unique terroir. Some of the wines receive wood ageing in barrels of various sizes prior to bottling wihich gives an impression of power and richness but never obviously oaky flavours.

All the wines are left on their lees prior to bottling; this ensures that the wine remains youthful and fresh.

Tasting Notes:

A radiant and expressive Pouilly-Fumé, this wine opens with an arresting nose of sun-ripened pineapple, luscious passion fruit, and a shimmering edge of flinty minerality — the unmistakable stamp of its Loire origins. Swirls of citrus zest and white flowers add lift and elegance. On the palate, it’s generous yet finely etched, with juicy tropical fruit surging over a spine of chalky freshness. Subtle white pepper and a saline lick emerge towards the finish, adding intrigue and tension. The vibrant acidity carries the flavours long after each sip, making it as captivating as it is refreshing.

Decant before serving to allow its exotic aromatics and layered complexity to fully unfurl.
