Smith & Sheth | Hawke's Bay, New Zealand

Grape Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo & Cabernet Franc

Alcohol: 14.3% ABV

The Story

Smith & Sheth is the visionary collaboration between Master of Wine Steve Smith and US environmentalist Brian Sheth. Based in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand, they create the CRU label—celebrating terroir, heritage, and meticulous craftsmanship. They operate as a modern-style négociant, sourcing exceptional fruit from regions across New Zealand, including Bridge Pa Triangle and Magatahi, under the Aotearoa New Zealand Fine Wine Estates umbrella.

Vineyard & Winemaking

Handpicked parcels from young and old vines in the stony riverbed soils of the Gimblett Gravels sub-region in Hawke’s Bay. Naturally low cropping, devigourated vines allows for
increased concentration in the resulting wine. The vineyards are run to Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand standards.

The fruit is 100% destemmed but not crushed, and the Cabernets co-fermented. All ferments were plunged once a day to ensure gentle extraction during fermentation. After pressing, the wine remained in tank for malolactic fermentation before being transferred to French oak barriques, 60% being new, for maturation. The wine was bottled after 20 months in barrel.

Tasting Notes:

A deep, intense ruby red colour with complex dark red fruits predominant on the nose. A beautiful meld of spicy berry aromas with liquorice, sweet oak and vanilla in the background. The three varieties in this wine complement each other in both aroma and palate. The Cabernet Sauvignon delivers power and structure, the Tempranillo, juiciness and flesh with the Cabernet Franc adding aromatic lift and freshness.

A unique Hawke's Bay blend with the structure that will allow it to age for at least 10 years.
